The Wiz Live Review

The Wiz Live

All I can say great memories with the original production of The Wiz with

Dianna Ross as Dorthy, Michael Jackson as the scarecrow, Nipsey Russell as the tin man, Ted Ross as the Lion, Mabel King as Evillene, Theresa Merritt as Aunt Em, Lena Horne as the Glinda the good, Richard Prior as the Wiz, and so many other great characters came to mind when I witnessed the live production.

The props were thought with the dancers in mind. I really loved the way the props moved out of the way to allow the next scene to emerge. This cast, Shanice Williams as Dorthy, Elijah Kelley as the Scarecrow, David Allen Grier as the lion and what a voice he has on him, Ne-yo as the tin man, Uzo Aduba as Glinda the good, Stephanie Mills as Aunt Em, Mary J Blidge as Evillene, and Queen Latifa as the Wiz was great.

I truly enjoyed the production as a whole. The vocals, dances, scenes, props, lines, transitions, and wardrobe. Even though they did and excellent job, it will always be compared to the first Wiz. Truly the talent in this one is comparable to the first, but there is no replacing the vocals, scenes, and the dog Toto, who was with Dorthy every step of the way.

All in all I missed the dog Toto, which is what sets the first Wiz apart from this one. I understand the complexities of having an animal on the set of a live performance, but it just wasn’t the same.

Thank you to the entire crew that made this memory possible, and to pull off a live performance is worthy of a standing ovation.

Yaya
